Can't connect to mongodb using username/password. Can connect without credentials
I have a docker-compose.yml file.

In my app.js file, I have this line:
mongoose.connect((process.env.MONGO_URI), { useNewUrlParser: true });
I have tried numerous different edits to the code, but I can't seem to get it to connect with a username and password. Doing MONGO_URI=mongodb://mern_db:27017/database
without creating environment variables in the docker-compose.yml works though, but that's without a username/password. I asked on SO already, but I haven't gotten an answer. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Please help.
