VB.NET Custom ID column
The code I have below works fine, although I'm worried about ID collisions, and I really don't like generating the ID in .NET - I'd much rather have the database do it, but I'm struggling.
When I insert a new row, I check the TableCounts table for the row count on the table I'm updating, add one to it, and then insert the new row with the ID that is created. It's been bothering me for a while that there's a much better way to do this and I'm missing it.
I know collisions are unlikely but any help on improving this method would be appreciated.
My ID is made of the first 4 characters are the shop id and the rest are the job id.
Query.CommandText = "SELECT `Count` FROM `TableCounts`
WHERE `TableName`='Refunds'
AND `LocationID`='" & MiscClass.LocationID & "'
LIMIT 1;"
tmpid = MiscClass.LocationID & "1" & (Query.ExecuteScalar() + 1).ToString
Query.CommandText = "UPDATE `TableCounts`
SET `Count`=`Count`+1
WHERE `TableName`='Refunds'
AND `LocationID`='" & MiscClass.LocationID & "';"
Query.ExecuteNonQuery()
The & above is like . in php - it concatenates.
The db is syncing with another remote db and changes can happen on the other db before the sync, so I'm trying to avoid overwriting rows.
