I'm new to MySQL and can't load data due to secure-file-priv and local_infile variable settings

0

I've tried just about everything I can find out by searching Google. I'm running a local install of MySQL community server 8.xx on macos 10.14. I installed from the dmg, and Workbench and created a shema and a test table. However, I can't load data from a csv because using "load data local infile.." errors out bc of this error: "The used command is not allowed with this MySQL version."

I tried to change that by adding it to my mysql.server file but that doesn't seem to do anything. I also changed the local_infile variable using a query and that doesn't work either. I can get it 'ON' but it still throws the error.

On MacOS Mojave and MySQL 8 there is no my.cnf file to update. I tried creating one but obviously did something wrong bc when I created the file and added it to the config file option in the PrefPane the server failed to start. The documentation says that this variable must be set on the server and on the client. I'm too new at this to fully grasp what that means as well as how to do that.

I also tried to load the data using load data infile however the variable secure_file_priv is set to NULL. Once again I'm stymied as to how I should change that variable.

Any help would be much appreciated.
